How do you clean out the trigger assembly in a Ruger 10/22?
I'm in the process of cleaning out my Ruger 10/22 right now. How do you thoroughly clean the trigger assembly? Does anyone know if there is a youtube video that shows how to do it? The cleaning video that I'm watching right now doesn't cover that.
I know that this is going to sound primitive but I pull the receiver out of the stock all in one piece. No need to disassemble or remove barrel. First I brush the bore and wet everywhere else with powder solvent and let it sit a few minutes. Get a 3 pound coffee can and fill it 3/4 to 2/3 the way full of mineral spirits ( paint thinner) and a generous squirt of machine oil. Submerge the receiver in the thinner and reach in and grab the bolt handle and work the action back and forth. Also use a tooth brush to get the area where the bolt rides by locking the action open. In no time the thinner will look like coffee. By dunking it in and out like a teabag and working the action it will come spectacularly clean. I probably only do this every 3rd or 4th time shooting with just a normal "what you can see" cleaning in between. This method is equally effective on Ruger MKII pistols too as they are a bear to disassemble. Compressed air is also a real benefit to blow all the thinner out and any stuck bits as well but it will evaporate without air. Oil as usual and you will have the cleanest 10/22 on the block. I know it sounds wasteful but if you wait a couple of hours with the plastic lid back on the can most of the powder crap and dirt will settle on the bottom. You can then pour out the clear thinner into a approved sealed container to use the next time. I have even filtered it to make it crystal clear again but it's cheap so I don't feel bad throwing it away either. Just be sure to work in a well ventilated area and not around open flame ( water heater) thinner is flammable but but not as volatile other solvents.
