Upgrading the Power Supply Unit for Your Model Train

When you first started out with building model trains, you must have decided to settle for smaller trains and accessories just to avoid a massive disaster. However, your venture and efforts finally paid off and you're an expert when it comes to model trains. Let anyone dare you and you will have shelves of excellent trains to show off your skills. However, if you love the hobby of model trains, at some point you will have to upgrade the power supply unit to receive optimum performance.

The unit you received with your smaller sets will not be sufficient to handle the extra power you may want now, especially since you may be planning to extend your model train set. Though upgrading the power supply unit is not a difficult task, you have to keep in mind certain aspects in order to purchase the right one that meets your needs.

First of all, you have to decide whether you plan on expanding your train set substantially or whether you only intend on bringing a minor expansion to the train set. There is no point in purchasing a larger power supply unit if you only want to add a few tracks. You'll be parting with your savings as well as you'll face a hefty electricity bill for the extra units your train had consumed.

Another aspect that has to be looked at closely is how many trains you plan on deploying on the train tracks. Since you are already planning on increasing the size of your layout, you might as well run more trains on it at the same time. If a transformer was not provided with your previous power supply unit, then you should look into buying one. Just imagine - having all your trains run one after the other! Now that is what you can call entertainment!

Before you actually head to the store, be sure to have all the necessary information written down so that you don't waste your time and get on the store owner's nerves. Plus, the last thing you need is to buy the wrong power supply unit. Therefore, write down details such as what your current power supply unit offers and what you need the new power supply unit to provide. Also jot down the amount of expansion you intend on carrying out and the number of trains you want to run on the tracks.

Once you have that information listed, it will be much easier to purchase a power supply unit that will meet your needs. You can also ask for assistance at the store by presenting them with the information you have listed. This will make it much easier for them to guide you in the right direction.

Consider buying more units for your original train set rather than buying a bigger model train power pack. This way, if there are any malfunctions, your whole train set will not suffer from the power outage. Instead, only the specific parts of the set that are powered by the malfunctioned unit will be affected.

This technique is also energy efficient since it prevents the drainage of a single power unit. You can eventually run more trains simultaneously and they will run smoothly because of the optimal power sharing.

How can I make a chassis fan work without a computer motherboard or power supply unit?

I need to make my own power supply unit that can run from the mains, I cant use a computer PSU because it needs a motherboard.

Just use a 12VDC output power supply transformer, 300ma or so will do.
