Diesel Powered Vehicles - How To Increase Energy Efficiency With Modern Diesel Fuel Pumps

Many vehicles such as lorries or buses are powered by high speed diesel engines. In the olden days, diesel engines tend to burn a lot less efficiently, which leads to wastage and damage to the environment. Today, we are all more conscious of the harm that we are doing to our environment. This gives rise to special directives that help to govern the use of diesel in engines. Today's diesel fuel pumps are designed more elegantly, and function more efficiently. The end result is that such pumps lead to cost savings due to more efficient fuel burning.
In order to appreciate the benefits, it is important to first understand how a dysfunctional diesel fuel pump can affect your vehicle adversely.
A vehicle derives its energy from a fuel injection system. That is, an injection pump is specially calibrated to pump fuel into an internal combustion engine. This is a high pressure environment, and such systems are designed to work smoothly for minimal loss of energy.
In a new pump system, there is little energy loss, and the car engine can derive maximum energy from the system. In other words, equipment such as the fuel injection pump and valve must work in optimal condition for there to be minimal energy loss.
Sometimes, due to faulty diesel pumps or valves, the fuel is not injected into the combustion engine optimally, and this leads to problems. For instance, the vehicle may require prolonged cranking before being able to start up. Also, the vehicle may seem to be consuming more fuel than usual.
To check if the diesel pump has worn off, you may wish to observe the timing of the vehicle. If the timing seems off compared to normal usage, then there is a good chance that the pump may not be working correctly. In that case, check with your car technician.
You should be going for checks if:
1) You own a worn out vehicle and you are not sure when was the last time the pump has been replaced.
2) You have replaced the pump many years back. Now, such pumps have been greatly improved and you may wish to take a look at what is available in the market, even though your vehicle continues to work. Replacing an old worn out pump may lead to lower fuel consumption due to higher efficiencies.
3) You have just bought a second hand vehicle and you are not sure if the pump is in good working condition.
If you are not trained in car repairs, do not attempt to replace the diesel pump on your own. These pumps need to be calibrated and if done correctly, may cause damage to other parts of the vehicle.

Do I have to prime a fuel pump on a diesel?
I put a used fuel pump on a 1990 7.3 liter Ford. Didn't pump up the fuel to the filter head bleeder. So I put a new pump on there. Same problem. Both tanks are clear full. Usually I can crank about 10 seconds on a new tank (after running a tank dry) and it pumps right up. What is the deal? Do I need to pour fuel in the filter assembly? Pressurize the tanks? I have never had this problem and have worked on diesels a LOT. Next I am going to blow on the tank and see if fuel comes out at the lift pump. Thank you in advance!
Sounds like you need to pump it some more. You should get fuel out of the bleeder. Don't pour fuel into the filter that only works on Gas. I have done this but only do this at your risk. Take starting fluid and spray a VERY SMALL AMOUNT in the air intake into the block. Crank and it will fire and pull any air in the injectors out. You can repeat this but if you spray too much you can damage the engine. Head gaskets. a 1 second blast would be more than enough.
