Now that winter is almost over, it's time to start inspecting your tow truck for wear and tear that resulted from the abuse of Mother Nature. There are many areas that should be inspected thoroughly. A little bit of preventative maintenance now can save you a great deal of down time in the future. Many of your towing equipment tools may also be ready for replacement. Chains, V-Chains, Ratchets or D-Rings typically will show clear signs of wear, bent links or warped ratchets are visible. In addition it is wise to inspect your toolboxes and brackets for chips or holes, those small imperfections can lead to those parts rusting out over time and looking like Swiss cheese. In addition, due to the snow banks some of your fenders may be warped or broken; replacement of these parts is easy with just a few nuts and bolts to remove and install.
Also your winches, cables, cable guides and sheaves should also be inspected to prevent costly repairs. If your winch cable is showing signs of wear, it is typically in your best interest to replace it before it snaps while doing a tow. Safety first can prevent costly insurance issues. Your hydraulic cylinders and pumps should also be inspected, if you notice they are moving extra slow or jumping. It may be time for a rebuild or some grease. Take the time to look at these areas and it could save you hundreds, if not thousands down the road.
There are also many Jerr-Dan parts that you should inspect to the best of your ability. These tow truck parts include control handles, linkage, control hoods, grids, wear pads and L – arms. Some of these items may be clearly bent, but some may require some investigating while you are towing.
In addition it is common for tow lights to be broken or the bulbs to go out over time. It is best to replace these bulbs as quickly as possible to limit excuses for drivers not paying attention to rear end you, because they didn't see your big red wrecker. In addition it is wise to invest in safety equipment and have spares. Your warning triangles may have been misplaced over the winter, or first aid kit may require to be restocked up. These are important items to have fully functional at all times while your tower is on the road.
In addition, your cab and chassis should be inspected thoroughly. The simple things that people forget about; include replacing wiper blades, oil, anti-freeze, lubing factory suggested areas, and checking the charge on your battery as well as tire wear. After you get your tow truck up to par, you should make sure you state inspection sticker is addressed as well. The fine for an expired inspection sticker, especially in Massachusetts, can negate a day's profit.
