Amber Mines
The most easily accessible amber deposits were exhausted by the middle of the nineteenth century and so a system of dredging the shallow coastal waters was introduced, recovering amber from the lower sedimentary layers, and ensuring a continuing supply of the raw material for the local craftsmen who were producing high quality Baltic amber jewellery.
Ten years later, the first industrial scale land operation was established, the process becoming completely mechanised by 1930; conveyor belts transporting the amber-bearing soil into waiting freight wagons which would travel to nearby spray houses where the amber is released using high-pressure hoses.
This process continues to this day, and amazingly, experts claim that at present rates of extraction, Yantarny in the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, has enough supplies of Baltic amber to last for another three hundred years. So, if you're thinking of purchasing an item of Baltic amber jewellery in the near future, you'll have no need to be concerned about a shortage of supply, and a corresponding increase in price. Sterling silver is the other major component of amber jewellery made in the Baltic States; although it isn't mined locally.
Since the collapse of Communism and the Soviet Union, amber related crime has become much more of a concern, with a general air of lawlessness existing in the vicinity of the mining operations. Although Baltic amber is one of the less valuable gemstones, nonetheless it still has a value, and it is certainly worth stealing; especially when considering the low wages and high levels of unemployment experienced in the area.
At the site of the Yarntarny Mine, informal gangs scavenge for amber inadvertently discharged through broken pipes and sluices. Occasionally a sizeable piece of Baltic amber can be retrieved this way, which can be sold for the equivalent of several weeks' average salary – well worth the effort and risk.
The mines are large and poorly patrolled by security guards and corruption is rife, so stones can easily become 'lost' in transit by a small payment to the appropriate person...not the most glamorous aspect of your amber jewellery I suppose.
In the hamlet of Muromskoye, not too far from Kaliningrad, an 'amber rush' began when a local farmer discovered a large piece of amber whilst ploughing his field. In the free-for-all scramble that followed, local villagers dug haphazard trenches, some being so dangerous that they collapsed and killed several people. The local authorities stopped the practice in 1996, arresting two hundred people and confiscating ten kilogrammes of amber; but they have failed to come up with a satisfactory solution to the problems that blight the area, namely poverty and unemployment.
Until the government is successful in doing this, there will continue to be a significant illegal and black market component to the Baltic amber industry. This is unfortunate, but will in no way diminish the beauty of your amber necklace, or tarnish the memorise associated with your amber ring, or take away that brief stress-busting moment you enjoy by merely touching or stroking a finely polished piece of Baltic amber jewellery.

How do I start looking for amber,quartz and minerals in the raw?
I am now disabled and want to start looking for raw gems. Is there any one I can talk to about my new hobby? I am 47 and live in south wisconsin. I read I could look for malachite here. I am interested in looking at terrain depth and the whole bit. How about cliff sides?
Best way is to join a local mineral society. They know the best places to find materials and most have field trips that could accommodate a disabled person. Most of the stuff you are looking for is in veins and can be found mostly in older mines or areas known to have it. It really all depends on where the deposits are the best and a mineral society would be more than happy to help out. Your involvement in the club is usually at your own pace and they are not often very demanding. Most at my local club are retirees that enjoy a good dig every month or so and they bring back some fantastic specimens from a 3 -5 hour dig. Give it a try!
