DIY Ghillie Suit Kit - Make Your Own Ghillie Suit
Nothing gives the advantage out in the field more than a Ghillie suit. They are basically an essential garment for the professional paintball player, giving a competitive edge to opposition. Its also really fun and effective to tailor make Ghillie suits, and kits are available, allowing you to custom make your suit to whichever territory you fall into. Ghillie suit kits are generally constructed using an overall as the base, normally being a Battle dress uniform or pilot suit, or otherwise a poncho can be used. Then rough burlap flaps or jute twine is attached to the overall piece, using knots, and skipping sections in which other colours are later added. This combination of colours need to be used wisely and it always pays to go out to where you will using it and absorb the landscape. An average Ghille suit will consist of 3-4 parts depending on the environment. Its good to use no seam synthetic fabric for your base overall so the suit feels smooth and comfortable to wear, along with being more lightweight and easier to move around in.
Custom making your suit will save you some good money and also offers a lot more flexibility. Normally it will take from 2-6 hours to create a Ghillie suit, depending on the kit you buy. Standard sets of Ghillie suits will come with a mix of colors to make up either a woodland, desert, mossy or leafy color scheme. With custom colour sets you can pick the exact colors you want for each bundle you get with that particular kit.
In most cases with a Ghillie suit, you get around 7 pounds of pre-cut, and dyed Jute thread, a 5'x9' nylon net with 1"x1" squares, and color directions on how to assemble an exact replica of the full Ghillie Poncho. Or you can remove the remove the front portion to create Sniper Ghillie suit, which is also popular. Remember to check that the materials in the Ghillie suit you are purchasing are Water-proof , Rot-proof , Mildew resistant , Fire-retardant , Washable , Odor-less and Non-Allergenic.
Desert, mossy, and woodland themes are the most common for Ghille suits. Use your imagination, the options are endless. Remember you are trying to become one with the bush, nothing in nature has perfectly straight lines so you need to cover everything. Its a good thing to create a separate Ghillie suit for your rifle as well, use local elements like twigs, branches and vines can be incorporated into the netting to further camouflage the Ghillie suit. These kits are really fun to make and can be a hobby in itself, if you are into making fly's for trout fishing then making Ghillie suits for paintball and hunting will be right up your alley.
