Roadblock Wheel Chocks – What are they made of?
Wheel chocks are very important – not only in the workplace, but also for those consumers who wish to have them at home for the truck, RV or boat. What they're made of can also play a critical part in what they can be used for and where they are placed. If you are in a business where wheel chocks are used, you may or many not know of the huge variety of materials that they can be made from. Here is a short summary of the materials, and how they make a difference in the way they are used.
Rubber Wheel Chocks
A rubber-made chock will last for a long time. Resistant to oils from the road, UV rays from the sun, road salt and especially moisture caused by rain or a wet area, these wheel chocks are durable and hearty. Usually found in a choice of sizes, most will come with a convenient carrying handle. Other benefits of the rubber construction include great staying power and they won't cause damage to tires and pavement. Rubber chocks work well in keeping a truck or trailer in place while loading or unloading, for utility and telephone vehicles, and road construction trucks.
Urethane Wheel Chocks
Urethane is a plastic compound that is more flexible and weather-resistant than natural rubber. This makes the chock not only resistant to weather, but it also will oppose oils and chemicals as well. Colors and sizes abound, yet most are universal safety yellow and orange, and provide safety for a number of vehicular applications. Urethane wheel chocks are also a bit more lightweight and can be easier to carry than their rubber counterparts. This type of chock is often used on roads for a complete range of auto, truck and trailer sizes, with varying dimensions available. It can be used on industrial sites such as mining and construction in the larger sizes which accommodate up to 32" wheels, as well as smaller sizes for light trucks, autos, trailers and utility trucks.
Polyethelene Wheel Chocks
A wheel chock made of Polyethelene will be similar to a urethane one, in that it is very durable and resistant to weather, oils, fuels and solvents. Depending on the size chosen, it will perform for the same types of purposes as the Urethane chocks.
Steel
Heavy duty metal wheel chocks are typically used in snowy and wintry conditions and are serrated to be able to "grab" the snow and ice. Other location uses for this product would be for off-road territory.
Aluminum
While Aluminum may be thought of as a lightweight material by some, with the proper gripping teeth this type of wheel chock may be able to hold up to 55,000 pounds. It can be used in situations where road conditions are more solid.
Combination Products
Some chocks come in combo with both rubber and steel such as the Roadblock Wheel Chocks. This makes for a very durable chock that will serve in numerous types of weather and road conditions.
Whichever material substance you choose for your wheel chocks, be sure to review your particular circumstances regarding proper placement, size of the vehicle, pointing in the correct direction and follow OSHA guidelines.

When replacing one back tire on your car, what wheels do you chock?
I know when you replace a front wheel, you chock both back tires but what if you are chocking one back wheel? Which tire(s) do you chock? Can you get by just chocking the other back wheel or do you have to chock the back tire and one of the fronts? I'm sure it's ideal to chock as many tires as possible but what is typically done in this situation. Thanks to all who responded on my last question. FYI, I replaced the tire in question but I want to prepared for the next incident.
